Silver is the metal of the moonshine, is the humble flesh of the noblest gold, it ripples into a pool of the subtleties but fuses easily into the space of void. Object is the appearance of hierarchy, object is the embodiment of time. Object functions to ornate while ignoring the crime of decoration and the burden of beauty, like what is underneath the precious materiality of silver — the cruel equality to a certain amount of value, that marks the line of the miserable and the noble. The measurement of value marks women, alongside women’s craft into the domestic sphere that, implies that female craft should always be eclipsed by the most rational and functional arts of men.

Layla (Yuanxing) Lin

Yuanxing (Layla) Lin is a London-based jewellery and metal artist whose practice explores the intersections of craft, material integrity, and feminist thought

After graduating in Jewellery Design from Central Saint Martins and completing an MA in Cultural Studies at Birkbeck, University of London, Yuanxing pursued further research at the Royal College of Art, where she developed an original method of creating woven-metal materials.
